I often get asked how to take care of my fursuits, so here's a little
page on the proper care of fursuits and fursuit bits. If you have
any maintenance problems with your suit, feel free to contact me.
Suits that have been worn more than once may be subject to a repair
fee, but there are a lot of minor fixes that I'm happy to do for free!
Fur in general:
Fake fur benefits from regular brushing. If you fail to brush your
fur at all, it will gradually become matted, until you have a
felt-like mess for short furs, or a bird's-nest tangle on long furs.
Once it gets to that point there's not much help for it, so keep
your fur from getting nasty by gently brushing it before wearing.
Do NOT brush fur every day, and do NOT brush roughly! Unlike your
hair, fur fabric cannot grow back the fibers it loses when you brush
it, and will eventually brush bald if it is brushed too often. But
regular, gentle brushing will keep it looking nice much longer.
Fur is machine washable, but you'll definitely want to put it inside
a pillowcase to keep it from tangling. Wash in cold or warm (not hot!)
water on a gentle cycle. Or, if you want to be extra careful,
hand wash in the sink or tub. Use a detergent meant for cold washing,
such as Woolite. NEVER EVER EVER put your fur
in the dryer with the heat on! Heat will ruin most fur fabrics, so
if you do machine dry it, do it on a tumble-only cycle, NO HEAT, and
don't use a blow dryer on high either. It's best, really, to
just let your fur drip-dry.
Tails:
Tails are nothing but fur, stuffing, and sometimes a little
delrin, wire, or plastic. Which means that you can machine or hand
wash it, as described above. Just remember, no heat, and brush with
care!
Ears:
Ears also benefit from careful brushing,
but should not be machine washed. Gently hand-wash your ears
in the sink and position them in the correct pose when you lay them out
to dry.
Hand paws:
Once again, you may wish to occasionally brush your hand paws, and
you'll definitely need to wash them, as they're going to get quite
dirty from use. Handpaws should not be machine washed (you'll risk
breaking claws, and not all glues used for pawpads are machine
safe.) Instead, hand wash gently in the sink and let drip dry.
Feet paws:
Feet are also not machine safe. They should be carefully hand washed
and allowed to drip dry. Outdoor feet in particular may take a long
time to dry, due to the assorted layers of the shoes or slippers used
as a base. Be sure your feet are dry all the way through before
storing.
Bodysuits:
Bodysuits are pretty much just fur, so care for as described above.
Wings:
Don't machine wash wings! In fact it's generally not a
good idea to immerse them at all. Spot clean with soap and a damp
cloth.
Heads:
If you have one of my older heads you should NEVER immerse it in water The material
used for jawsets is water resistant, but not waterproof. Getting the
surface of the head a touch damp won't hurt it, but if you completely
immerse your head, you will ruin the jawset. Spot clean your
head carefully with a damp cloth, and do not let the gums or nose
of your head become completely soaked. My more recent heads do not have this problem, and you can immerse them safely, but surface cleaning is still generally the best method.
These instructions are meant for suits the way I make them, of course,
so may not apply to suits made by others, except for general fur
care.
